Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been practiced since 300BC. According to the traditional principles, our health is dependent on the body's vital energy known as Qi. This energy flows through channels, known as meridians around the body. In a normal healthy body, a balance exists (homeostasis) but when we have physical mental or emotional factors the flow is disrupted and may manifest in symptoms of pain, inflammation, weakness and emotional changes.
Treatment with acupuncture aims to restore the body systems to a state of homeostasis, using needles to unblock the meridians. This promotes the natural flow of Qi which promotes a healthy balance.
Acupuncture has gained increasing popularity in the Western world since the 1950's due to the development of diagnostic equipment that enables researchers to 'visualise' its effects and the many research articles supporting its use.
